He’s roughly 1.5 months old, and a new member of the nursery (those less than six months old) at @r.e.s.c.u.e, the Reteti elephant sanctuary on the Namunyak Community Conservancy @nrt_kenya, in Kenya's remote Mathews Range. Orphan elephants arrive here for a multitude of reasons—simply losing their family as the herd moves off, or in this case, falling into a well while drinking, and being unable to escape the hyenas that later discovered and attacked it, resulting in the loss of its trunk. It is estimated that between five and ten calves are rescued in northern Kenya each year, from a total elephant population of roughly 8,700. Those received by the sanctuary are cared for by community members such as the amazing Mary, and returned to the wild. I’ll be following the story of Long’uro as I work with the community here. This little guy will have his own battles to fight. He’s strong, and in the very capable hands of Dr. Stephen Chege, who was able to tidy up the tip of the torn trunk while Long’uro was under general anesthesia, and repair some nasty hyena fang holes on his upper trunk and face.
