One of the big realizations I have had in the earth-shattering year that is 2020 is that I’m not sure if I can continue to be present online in the way that I have in the past. Over the last two years I have struggled with my mental health, and I recognize a direct connection between the time I spend present on social media and my anxiety. I am learning new ways to be - shedding old skin, letting go of limiting beliefs, learning how to stand firmly in the core of my own being. I’m deep in the trenches of healing my own trauma. And I know now, I don’t have to continue down the same tracks. I can change how I navigate this world; within and without. I can put on my own oxygen mask first. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ When the allegations toward Nahko surfaced, my instinct wasn’t to rush into shouting it through the megaphone that is this platform right away, the way I would have in the past, but to go within and sit with my own pain first. And it’s deeply important for me to acknowledge this and to honor that for myself: I am allowed to process my feelings, to get my bearings, and to bring attention to my own heart before I take on the responsibility of talking about it with 2 million people on a platform that exists on my phone. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I don’t know anymore how to honor my own heart while rushing to open it up to the world at the same time. And right now, I’m heartbroken. For the survivors of this gut-wrenching abuse. For everyone who spoke up but was continually dismissed. For the community who has suffered a deep, long-standing betrayal. For everyone who has a deep connection to his music - mine, entwined with a healing journey through loss that is very hard to now separate. I’m heartbroken for all women.
