Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro announced on July 7 that he has tested positive for COVID-19. The far-right firebrand, who was elected in 2018 trading on conspiracy theories and half truths, previously dismissed COVID-19 as a "little flu" and remarked that "we all die someday." In early April, when Brazil had just more than 11,000 cases and under 500 deaths, TIME reported Bolsonaro had flouted his own health ministry's guidance by going on walkabouts to greet supporters and urged Brazilians to leave isolation and return to work, defying the advice of the World Health Organization. As of Tuesday, the country has the world's second-highest number of confirmed cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, with some 1.6 million—and more than 65,000 deaths.
