Photo by @brianskerry An orca engages in predation of an elephant seal pup in the waters off the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). Two families of orca that live in this location have devised a feeding strategy that is unique in the world, as far as we know: A family leader—an older, wiser female—stealthily swims into shallow water to what's called a weaning pool and grabs a seal pup. Then she carries it offshore to her family and teaches them this predatory strategy. The entire event can sometimes last for hours before they actually feed. #orca #predation #whaleculture
