Photo by @beckythale Congressional and civil rights leader John Lewis passed away today at 80 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. In the fall of 2018 I was assigned to shoot a portrait of the congressman for the magazine. My editor and I were given access to his office about an hour before the shoot was scheduled to start. After we set up and tested our lights, we waited, surrounded by hundreds of framed prints, letters, artwork, and photographs; all evidence of his amazing life. It felt like every inch of wall was filled, and on every bookshelf and table, some artifact of his life. By the time he arrived, it was hard to feel anything but awestruck. During the shoot, he was kind and introspective, reflecting on the work that still lies ahead.
