The kimono is one of Japan’s most recognizable cultural artifacts, and has been worn for around 800 years. Since around the middle of the 20th century, however, the garment has all but vanished from everyday life. Nowadays, a kimono is generally worn for celebrations such as weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies.
