Photo by @sarah_stacke / On a hazy mountain evening Sarah Elizabeth Burkey and I walked the trails at Kituwah, a site cherished by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians (EBCI). It was Sarah’s idea to get off the beaten path and into the trees. Sarah is a songwriter, storyteller, and recording artist. She was one of the first people I met when I started working in Cherokee years ago.
In the Great Smoky Mountains, the EBCI is reclaiming culturally and historically important lands, like Kituwah, that were lost during colonization. The trails at Kituwah are enjoyed by tribal members and the public.
