Going back to the 19th century, experts debated exercise for girls. Many thought it would improve girls’ character as well as build stronger bodies, fend off disease and make healthy future mothers. But some viewed too much physical activity as dangerous for girls.
As girls exercised, they also worked on dress reform, trading corsets (!) and long skirts for bloomers and looser styles that offered greater freedom of movement.
The history of girlhood is complicated. Although definitions of girlhood have changed, what it means to grow up as a girl in the U.S. has always been part of the American conversation.
