Hawaiʻi honors today as Discoverers Day in recognition of the Polynesians first landed in Hawaiʻi. Discoverers Day is Hawaii’s counterpoint to most of the mainland United States’ recognition of Columbus Day.
Many experts believe that the Polynesians discovered both North and South America hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus.
The late Herbert "Herb" Kawainui Kāne painted this scene of Hawaiian Royalty on Punaluʻu Beach as part of a mural in the old Punaluʻu Museum in Big Island. The mural was stolen and never recovered after the resort hotel was built and closed at that site.
Herbert "Herb" Kawainui Kāne, a founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and designer of legendary Hōkūle‘a, Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe, was celebrated artist, historian and author. He is considered one of the principal figures in the renaissance of Hawaiian culture in the 1970s.
