Webs — some dry, some dewy — all lovely. When I was young I had a traumatic encounter with spider webs while exploring the shore of Lake Cumberland. My best friend and I had scrambled up to a ledge that nature had carved out of the shale-covered shore and ventured across. As we did, we were greeted by giant spider webs taller than us that suddenly seemed to be blocking all potential exits. This sent me into a complete panic, because it was obvious to my pre-teen brain that giant spider webs must be made by equally giant spiders (duh). I don’t remember how I kept from jumping off that ledge in that moment of panic, but obviously I made it out (mostly) unscathed. I like to think that whatever strategies I used to mentally reframe those webs as something less threatening that day might have been the tiny seed that has now grown into a fascination with spiders and webs and all their complex beauty. It took almost 25 years to get there, but better late than never.
