While most species of prairie dog are traditional hibernators, going underground in the fall and remaining dormant until spring, the same cannot be said about the black-tailed prairie dog. Research has revealed that this species chooses when it will hibernate, often remaining above ground as long as it can continue to find food. Even when poor conditions do force them into hibernation, they will often re-emerge earlier than expected in order to determine if conditions have improved.
