When North American black bears like this one @theomahazoo go into hibernation, they can lose up to 25% of their strength. This may seem like alot, but compared to humans, who would lose about 60% under the same conditions, the loss is rather minimal. So, how do black bears retain so much of their strength after five months of inactivity? They recycle their urea (chemical protein compound found in mammal urine) back into their blood, guts, and eventually, liver. Once the urea reaches the liver, amino acids can be produced, and muscle mass is restored. #bear #blackbear #northamerica #hibernation #urea #protein #muscle #PhotoArk #savetogether
