Have you ever promised yourself that you weren't going to eat something and then eaten it anyway? When I weighed 300 pounds, it happened to me more often than not. When I would give in to a craving or eat because of stress, I would feel regret, shame, or guilt. How could I have been so weak?

I had it wrong. We are wired to eat because, for 2 billion years, famine has wiped out just about every life form. Relying on willpower to not eat when our cells are hungry is destined to fail. It's not a willpower issue. It's not a moral issue.

Stress eating is a biological problem that emerges when your cells don't get what they want. It can also be an emotional problem stemming from boredom or, in my case, loneliness. So I asked a shaman to drop me off in a cave with no food and no people for four days to get to the bottom of it.

The reality is that you can program your cells not to be hungry, which gives you more than enough energy to overcome boredom and deal with loneliness. Willpower alone is not enough.
