One of twelve subspecies, the southwestern bobcat is a carnivore that does the majority of its hunting at night. These cats often prey on small mammals like rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels, waiting motionless and out of sight before pouncing. However, when taking down larger animals such as deer, the bobcat waits to strike until its prey is bedded down, making them an easier target. While smaller prey may be eaten in one sitting, larger prey is eaten over a period of time, with leftovers stored for future meals.
