POV: you get a smile and a wave from two cownose rays.

With snouts like a cow’s nose, cownose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus) have kite-shaped bodies with a width of over three feet. Thanks to research by @smithsonianenvironment’s Fisheries Conservation Lab and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, we now know where these cownose rays are off to. They winter in Cape Canaveral, Florida and migrate to the Chesapeake Bay in summer.

But how do they know when to pack up and leave? Research indicates that male and female cownose rays follow different cues when departing Florida. Females get moving based on sea surface temperature while male cownose rays may follow internal physiological cues.

Scientists use acoustic tags to track the rays’ movements. These rays have received their tags and are being observed before being released (with a smile and a wave) into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
