Video by @balazsgardi | To survey the impact of decades of war and daily life under the second coming of the Taliban, @jasonmotlagh and I rented a Toyota Land Cruiser to drive along Afghanistan’s 1400-mile long National Highway 1, also known as the Ring Road.

With almost 40 years of reporting experience in-country between us, the relative calm that now prevails offers a rare opportunity to see pockets that were once off-limits, and revisit places we had known only in conflict.

Open to chance encounters, we set out to meet Afghans of all stripes — from battle-hardened Taliban fighters to airstrike survivors, senior government officials to itinerant farmers. Follow us here and at @balazsgardi in the coming days to see more images and videos from our journey.
