And being a mom is worlds harder than I would have ever imagined it could be. • To me, it seems like an important part of surviving parenting is learning to notice and appreciate both the extreme beauty and the extreme difficulty in the most mundane moments. Photography has given me some experience with the former, and climbing has taught me some about the latter. But both of those things are easier said than done, and I suspect that adding the role of “mom” to my identity will lead to endless, repetitive refinement of these skills. • In 7 months of momming, I have picked up the camera about that many times.
