👏🏼 LETS TALK ABOUT INJURIES 👏🏼
The bane of every athlete’s existence.

One thing I have learned over the course of my career is that the body keeps the score. Every choice you make from nutrition, to training input, to sleep & recovery, etc, compounds in an intricate cascade of time & adaptation (or lack thereof) to make YOU! As you are. Right now.

Injury is the body’s way of telling you that a piece in the puzzle went askew. Something in your system of daily inputs and choices needs to be reevaluated.

This can be hard to swallow. Sometimes the injury could have been prevented; either through proper mechanics, adequate training, better resources, improved nutrition, and so on. It can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. Yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we often know exactly where that needle is. Other times, we are doing all the correct things, and an accident occurs.

Inadvertently, we tend to wrestle with feelings of shame or guilt. We all like to think of ourselves as indestructible, and injury or illness shatters that illusion. It makes us feels vulnerable. The reminder that we are simply human is a humbling one, and if we forget or ignore that truth, we will pay the price in flesh & bone. The body keeps the score.

Injury, however, is nothing to be ashamed of. It happens to all of us, and merely serves as information if viewed properly. Is it your fault that you got injured? No. But should you take responsibility for it? Absolutely.
Ownership of the situation gives you power over it. Taking responsibility allows you to tackle the healing process, seek proper medical care & assistance, gather information, make a plan, take action, incorporate the necessary life changes, and work hard to ensure the same thing doesn’t happen again. It’s YOUR body. You are not a victim, and there is no time to feel sorry for yourself. Ditch that mentality, and take charge. Life doesn’t happen to you; you make life happen.

Injury is opportunity. It forces you to slow down, take a good look at yourself, and make improvements. Whether you use that opportunity or not is up to you.
