Let the river run!

Celebrate our favorite planet with a tour of Earth’s rivers as seen by NASA/USGS #Landsat satellite missions. From the Arctic to the tropics, water plays a crucial role in making our planet habitable. This #EarthDay, sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of water around the world, set to Bedřich Smetana’s celebrated composition, Vltava (The Moldau River).

Image Description:
0:00 Panning over a satellite image of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska. Enhanced colors in the image highlight the water in chocolate brown, running in a central river toward the sea, with thousands of tiny branches in brown, like arteries leading to a heart. The brown water runs between green strips of living vegetation and yellows of dead vegetation.
0:13 Fade to a pan over the Taz River in Russia, which is covered in a flat white expanse of ice. On either side of the river, the land is light brown and sprinkled with tiny dark blue ponds, covered with patches of white ice.
0:18 Fade to an image of the same area in a different season, where the ice has melted and the river is a dark blue swirled with tan sediment.
0:22 Fade to an image of the same area in a third season, with more tan and green sediment swirling in the river and splotches of green and turquoise, where the smaller ponds are blooming with algae.
0:28 Fade to a pan along the Ucayali River in Peru, a sinuous beige river snaking away from the camera toward the horizon. The river stands out starkly against the dark green vegetation surrounding it. Smaller, lighter beige rivers trail out from the Ucayali.
0:41 Fade to a pan up the Atchafalaya River Delta in Louisiana. In enhanced color, the river is bright blue, surrounded by lime green vegetation. The river runs through the center of the image to the sea, with much thinner rivers extending out from the Atchafalaya like tiny veins.
0:54 Fade to a pan up the Potomac River in West Virginia. The river is a dark blue snaking line between darker brown land, with patches of green vegetation and beige, irregular geometric shapes, which are human settlements.
