Video by @paulnicklen | With long, loping strides, a lone sea wolf trots along the shore, an abalone shell in its mouth. For weeks on end, I camped out near the tidal flats of British Columbia, hoping for a glimpse of these unique animals. Sea wolves are a small culture of wolves subsisting almost entirely on marine life within the intertidal zone. I hunkered down in blinds under a constant drizzle and kept my eyes trained day in and day out for even the tiniest hint of life. I could hear the wolf pack nearby, howling its haunting chorus, but I never saw so much as a paw print in the sand. Finally the wolves emerged, silent as shadows, to forage in the shallows.
