As world economies were re-invigorated with new creative and technological innovations, so did Suntory’s business as we expanded production to meet growing demand and reinforce our Japanese ways of whisky making with high levels of “Japanese” quality and ingenuity.
1. The demand for Suntory Old (launched in 1950), Suntory Royal (launched in 1960) and Suntory Reserve (launched in 1969) exploded in the 70’s as the Japanese - whose tastes had become more sophisticated - looked for more premium blends to accompany their expanded cultural points of view.
2-3. In 1972, Keizo Saji established the Chita Distillery, on the shores of the Chita peninsula, a grain spirits distillery that would elevate the quality of grain whisky for the blends.
4-5. In 1973, he also built Suntory’s second malt whisky distillery in Hakushu in the Southern Japanese Alps, pushing the diversity in whisky making that will offer Suntory blenders an unrivalled variety of whiskies to create more complex and refined blends.
