Earth's five oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctic) help control our weather and water cycle, or the way water moves through the sky, rivers, land, and oceans. They help keep us cool by absorbing and reflecting heat from the Sun, and they also protect our atmosphere by holding in carbon, keeping it from acting as a greenhouse gas and warming our atmosphere.  Many amazing plants and animals live in the ocean! Some of the tiniest are called phytoplankton. These tiny plant-like creatures use water and sunlight to produce oxygen, just like land plants do. In fact, more than half of the oxygen we breathe is made by phytoplankton! Fisheries provide food for people all over the world, and many coastal communities depend on seaside visitors to support their businesses.  As climate change warms our planet, our oceans are heating up, affecting weather, storms, and sea life. Warmer temperatures mean that sea ice at the North and South Pole is melting, and in coastal areas, the water is coming higher up onto the land. This is called sea level rise, and it affects homes and businesses in places like Florida, California, Louisiana, Virginia, and many more.  NASA uses satellites, planes, and boats to study oceans. You can help too - with your parent or caregiver’s help, you can join NASA scientists in studying coral and sea kelp!
