Breakups can lead to lots of spiraling, like sea ice in the Sea of Okhotsk in late May 2023.
After the ice broke apart, it drifted with the wind and currents and created spirals off the coast of Russia. NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image May 28, 2023.
In the 2022-2023 winter, Arctic sea extent was below average, continuing a trend of shrinking sea ice extents.
