Intentional flooding may seem like the opposite of what you want to do, but it’s becoming necessary to keep the shoreline habitats in place at @grandcanyonnps.

Glen Canyon Dam traps most of the sediment that typically washes down the river during fall and spring floods. Without this sediment the sandbars begin to erode and disappear. To combat this, ecosystem managers started a series of high-flow experiments to simulate natural flooding and carry sediment downstream.
