Whether it was the effect of the incredible cinematography of Hoyte van Hoytema or Nolan's insistence on IMAX screenings, the breathtakingly and supremely beautiful visual poetry that is this film relentlessly brings us closer to the protagonist, who became an apostle of atomic bomb production. The audience may have expected to see scenes of the horrific explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but these scenes are abstracted and glossed over with ambiguous footages (although there is a strong homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey). On the other hand, when Oppenheimer is being humiliated at the hearing, a sex scene with his mistress suddenly appears on screen, and the way the film relentlessly shows the sculpture-like, naked bodies at length as if visually licking them makes us understand the smallness of the main character as a real human being.
