But one ordinary day at the pool took an unexpected turn. Mary Jo was swimming laps for about 10 minutes when she suddenly went into cardiac arrest. Two young lifeguards on duty, Alexis Fuqua and Kelly Michel, noticed her floating and no longer moving. They immediately called for help as they pulled Mary Jo out of the water. The YMCA's aquatics director, Cindy Moss, heard Kelly's whistle blow and ran out of her office to grab an AED. The three of them took turns performing CPR until EMS arrived. "This whole experience makes me so relieved that she's okay," Kelly said. Alexis, Kelly and Cindy saved a life, and they received Red Cross Lifesaving Awards from @RedCrossIL for their quick and seamless response.
