"Returning to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil for the first time since my move to Australia in 2020 was a profound experience. Collaborating with a team I deeply admire, I seized the opportunity to create this image that I love. Inspired by Salvador's rich history, I asked the makeup artist to craft a look reminiscent of scarification, a practice with roots in Africa and Brazil. Salvador, the first capital of Brazil, holds a complex history intricately tied to the unfortunate legacy of slavery. Today, it stands as the city with the largest black population in Brazil, where vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture flourishes. This endeavour marked my inaugural exploration into flash photography with long exposure and deliberate camera movement, using a Z 7II with a 105mm lens at f/4.0, ISO 200, and a 0.4-second exposure.
