Visiting the Elephant Community Center, you may notice a new accessory in Kandula’s yard. It’s a crate. A 17-foot-long, 8-foot-tall, 17,000-pound crate, to be precise. This new “furniture” is not for decoration. In the fall, the crate will help us transport Kandula to a new home. He is slated to participate in the Species Survival Plan for Asian elephants, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ breeding program. As we prepare to say “farewell” to Kandula, we will keep you posted of his crate training, acclamation process, and a celebratory event in his honor.
