Claire McCardell dress, 1950s.
This was considered a cool, casual, and carefree style for the postwar American woman and homemaker. Made of cotton gingham with plastic buttons and belt, it was attainable style that was also functional: frocks like this one had pockets and were intended to stay looking fresh all day. Known for the "American Look," McCardell's ready-to-wear designs were more affordable and easygoing than the high fashions of Paris.
