Wang Mei and other women leaving to work in the watermelon fields of Miaomiao Lake Village, a relocation community built by Chinese officials. She and her husband, Ma Shiliang, were part of the 5th wave in an environmental and poverty alleviation program that has resettled 1.14 million residents of #Ningxia, a territory of dunes and mosques and camels along the ancient Silk Road. One afternoon while the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists Edward Wong and @joshhaner were visiting Lake Miaomiao, Mei came home from the farm to nap during her lunch break. She’d been up since dawn spreading fertilizer over a field of watermelons. After a half-hour’s sleep, it was time to return to the desert sun. She and dozens of other women clambered onto the flatbeds of 2 John Deere tractors to return to the fields. “The work is so exhausting, and I’m dead tired,” said the 39-year-old, who supports her entire family on $12 per day. “I never worked like this before.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @joshhaner. #nytweekender
