Ma Shixiong stood amid the ruins of his brother’s former home in the old village of Yejiahe, in China’s #Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The road to Yejiahe winds uphill past a reservoir, past hills covered with soft yellow silt, past horses and haystacks in people’s yards. The landscape is wide and rolling and green. But when Yejiahe started growing warmer and drying out, the Chinese government ordered residents to migrate northward, a 5-hour drive away. Shixiong and his immediate family defied the government relocation order, but his extended clan, all Hui Muslims, made the move, and officials knocked their house down. When the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists Edward Wong and @joshhaner visited Yejiahe about 300 villagers remained. What China is doing in Ningxia and other provinces hit hard by drought and other natural and man-made disasters is a sign of actions that governments around the globe could take as they, too, bring to grapple with #climatechange.
