Doctors promote breast reconstruction as a way for women to “feel whole again” after undergoing surgery for #breastcancer. But some patients are choosing to remain breastless. They call it “going flat.” Rebecca Pine, a cancer survivor from Long Island who co-founded a photography and writing project called “The Breast and the Sea,” is one of the women who decided against reconstruction surgery. “It’s a tremendous amount to put your body through,” she said, “and it’s not like we’re going to get our breasts back.” Rebecca, 40, did have reconstruction after her first mastectomy, but had the implant removed later when she had a prophylactic mastectomy on her other breast. The photographer Béatrice de Géa took this portrait of Rebecca. Tap on our profile picture to view an #InstagramStory about the woman who are #goingflat after breast cancer.
