Donkeys are the ultimate beasts of burden. And among the earliest. The first #donkeys were probably domesticated about 6,000 years ago, and since then, they’ve carried building stones, food, trade goods, ammunition and people — including Jesus, who rode a donkey into Jerusalem on the day Christians celebrate as Palm Sunday. And yet museums are filled with celebrations of horses, not donkeys. Today, this misunderstood animal is starving for appreciation, sometimes abused and, in the worst cases, slaughtered for gelatin and for meat. But some veterinarians, donkey rescuers and donkey defenders are trying to fix the animal’s fate. @hezzikia photographed this pair of juvenile ?? s at the fourth annual Donkey Welfare Symposium at Cornell University’s veterinary school (@cornellvet) in Ithaca, New York.
