These waters were protected by President Kennedy in 1961 as a US National Marine Monument and because of this effort by the national government and the National Park Service at Buck Island, animals like sea turtles - along with many other creatures - have rebounded in these important ecosystems

Former President Obama, too, has worked to expand environmental protections, as he announced the creation of the largest US Marine Monument - protecting New England Deep Sea Canyons and Seamounts - as well as the expansion of Hawaii’s Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in 2016.
Most scientist state that at least 30% of Earth’s oceans must be protected if we are to have a healthy planet, yet today only about 3% of these waters have been designated as marine reserves.
