This 22-foot-tall steel structure is an actual beehive. When a colony of bees took over an abandoned building in Buffalo, New York, local architecture students decided to design a better home for them. Named “Elevator B,” this new habitat has a laminated glass bottom so people can walk in and observe the honey-making from below. Thanks to this educational twist, there’s an extra buzz of activity in this urban neighborhood. “Buildings don't just reflect our society, they shape our society down to the smallest spaces,” says architect Marc Kushner. “Elevator B” is featured in Marc’s TED book, “The Future of Architecture in 100 Buildings.” To see more architectural innovation, watch his #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/buildingsofthefuture
