If anyone symbolizes both the promise and the increasing problems of American orchestras, the delicate balance of vision and tradition, it’s Alan Gilbert, who is departing as the @nyphilharmonic’s music director after a tumultuous 8 years. Back in 2009, the @nyphilharmonic thought it had found the perfect package. Alan was only 42, decades younger than his immediate predecessors, who left as septuagenarians. But as the child of 2 violinists in the orchestra, he didn’t seem like a violent break with the past. He was committed to obscure 20th-century scores, but also willing to lead old favorites, with fireworks, in @centralparknyc. From interviews, though, it’s clear that things didn’t go quite as planned. @philipmontgomery took this portrait of Alan while on #nytassignment.
