Owen Leonard and his sons Tom, 7, and Liam, 11, at Lattone Lough, Northern Ireland. “When I was a teenager and started to drive,” Owen told the photographer @robstothard, “I had friends on the other side of the border and to call to their houses you had to go through a British army checkpoint.” (The first time going through, Owen recalled, the soldier asked if he’d get him some beer and cigarettes.) Now, of course, it’s quite different. The European Union’s creation of the single market, in 1993, meant that people and goods could move freely once again. And the last military installations were removed more than 15 years ago. But when Britain leaves the #EuropeanUnion, many Borderlanders worry that Ireland’s border “could once again be a site of interrogation, a prohibition rather than a place.” @robstothard photographed Owen, Tom and Liam while on assignment for #nytopinion in #NorthernIreland.
