As the photographer @ivorprickett traveled with Iraqi forces through the Rifai neighborhood of Mosul, Iraq, last month, evidence of a brutal street fight was all around him. ISIS’s grip on the city has shrunk to a tighter circle of neighborhoods, and Iraqi forces are closing in on the ISIS stronghold in the Old City. But airstrikes and shelling have been heavy, and many civilians are still trapped. “The destruction was immense,” @ivorprickett writes, “and it seemed not a single house was free of bullet holes — or worse.” He took this photo of civilians fleeing across a junction that was being targeted by a sniper. But for the most part, the streets were nearly empty. Those who remain stay inside their homes — afraid of crossfire, or of being seized by #ISIS fighters. Some Iraqi soldiers, as well as one resident who’d managed to flee, said that ISIS fighters are trying to round up people still living in the area. “It’s a chilling thought, horrifyingly consistent with how the Islamic State has fought this battle for months,” @ivorprickett writes. “The militants’ last stand may well take place behind a wall of civilians.” Swipe left to see more photos.
