GPS satellite tags charge in the sun while Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientist Autumn-Lynn Harrison and colleagues from Maryland Department of Natural Resources set up the tagging station. The tags weigh about 2 percent of the pelican's mass and are designed with a sloped front to reduce drag when pelicans dive. A solar panel on top keeps the battery charged. The blue tape holds a magnet that turns the tag off. When scientists are ready to deploy the tag, they remove the magnet and the tag begins transmitting. #WeSaveSpecies . . . . .
