This colossal marble statue stands 3m tall! It was reconstructed from at least 77 fragments, and was originally carved around 350 BC as part of the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. There are a number of clues in the statue that point to the figure being Asiatic rather than Greek. His long hair, short beard and curving moustache were all Asiatic fashions at the time, and Greek portraits usually showed men bare chested, rather than in the long tunic and cloak seen here.
