Hunger VS. Cravings

Our bodies have gotten so used to poor eating and lifestyle habits that sometimes we have a difficult time reading its own signals. Cravings and overeating are learned behaviors that we develop over years of habit forming.

It is important to distinguish between cravings and REAL hunger:
-

Hunger is nonspecific, a range of foods will satisfy you.
Cravings are specific, nothing else will do but a specific food you want (instant gratification like chocolate, sweets, fries)

Hunger comes on gradually and grows over time
Cravings come on suddenly and feel urgent to satisfy

Hunger goes away after eating and feeling full
Cravings don’t go away when your stomach gets full causing discomfort and feeling stuffed

Hunger is more predictable and comes after not eating for some time
Cravings are associated with emotional states like stress, boredom, anger, sadness, or anxiety

Eating mindfully can help keep yourself in check before deciding to eat! Drink water 30 mins before eating to make sure you are not actually dehydrated rather than hungry. Try to make your daily environment temptation free and get enough sleep!
