A few months ago, a team of men and horses ascended the Greater #Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, carrying with them electrical wire, solar panels, batteries, toolboxes and drills powerful enough to grind through rock. Moving along steep hillsides, they began an unusual project, financed largely through a $40,000 grant from @internetsociety: to bring the internet to one of the most remote and starkly beautiful regions of the world. #Tusheti, an isolated, rural province along the border with Russia, is considered by the government in Tbilisi to have huge potential for tourism. But the internet will also stir ecommerce and local business development, and support healthcare and education. Of course, Tusheti has little electricity and perhaps more sheep than people, as this photo by @nyaniq suggests. Shepherds move down to more temperate pastures (places that offer internet service) when winter arrives. But come summer they flood the rocky terrain, often living in primitive second homes.
