In 2016, as many as 14,300 tourists visited #Tusheti, an isolated province in #Georgia along the border with Russia. They camp or stay in hostels and modest hotels, and hike, ride and explore. But the winter months bring isolation. The region is larger than Berlin, but only an estimated 50 people stay through the winter. Temperatures can fall into the single-digits Fahrenheit, and snow covers the main roads 5 or 6 months of the year. The village of #Shenako, seen here, has only one couple that stays for the winter. As the months progress, others arrive by helicopter, hitching a ride with Georgian Border Police, whose officers fly in monthly to change crews at border outposts. Recently, though, a team of workers financed largely by @internetsociety brought the internet to Tusheti. With connectivity comes tourism: In the last year, a new 100-bed hotel was proposed for Omalo, the region’s main village, and there’s talk of a major ski resort and a new roadway. While the internet will bring the world closer to Tusheti, some wonder what it will mean for the way of life here.
