Burmese peacock softshell turtles like this one at @zoowroclaw are perfectly suited for their aquatic lifestyles. Their elongated noses act like snorkels, allowing them to breath while resting in shallow waters. If they are completely submerged for a prolonged amount of time, however, these turtles have adapted processes that include rhythmic movements of their mouth cavity, acting similarly to the gills of fish. Because Burmese peacock softshell turtles are routinely hunted and served as delicacies in some countries, they are currently listed as Endangered.
