This is Halsey, an albino North American porcupine that was rescued by @NEwildliferehab after she was hit by a car in central Nebraska. After months of intensive rehabilitation she has completely recovered, other than one incisor tooth that will not grow back. Rodents like the porcupine have incisors that grow constantly over their lifetimes, and they must be perfectly aligned for wear. For this reason Halsey cannot be re-released into the wild as she must have her teeth trimmed at regular intervals. So, she now serves as a wildlife ambassador. Halsey was an adult when she came into rehab, so she is at least 5 years old now. Porcupines can live up to 30 years, making them one of the longest-lived animals in the rodent family. Halsey is extremely curious, and takes joy in causing trouble. According to her caretakers, she is an escape artist and uses her freedom to climb shelves, knock things down, and turn on faucets! North American porcupines have more than 30,000 quills on their body. Although they cannot shoot their quills, they are an effective defense against many predators. In addition to the quills, porcupines have a strong odor (akin to human body odor), that helps to warn predators. North American porcupines face widespread persecution by humans, who consider them pests for chewing on trees, garden tools, and plywood. Intentional killing by humans and fatalities caused by automobiles are large factors in annual mortality. @NEwildliferehab is an organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of native wildlife for return to the wild, and to educating people everywhere about how to live in harmony with wildlife. Each year they rehabilitate over 5,000 wild animals from more than 70 species.
