Is it a car? A pickup truck? Either way, Chuck Grantham still drives his 1985 Chevy El Camino to work, despite having a Ferrari and a Mercedes in his garage.⠀

The El Camino—a cult classic that launched in 1959 with the sales line "more than a car—more than a truck"—is the car with which Mr. Grantham has had the longest connection. ⠀

He bought his first one 32 years ago and drove it for 15 years before it quit on him, picking up a second that lasted another 15 years. When that one was on its last legs, he found a small dealership specializing in El Caminos and bought an exact replica, only in better shape.⠀

"There are not that many of them left," said Mr Grantham, a book publisher from Raleigh, N.C., "but you can buy good ones for pretty cheap if you look around."⠀

After three decades of El Camino ownership, he decided to make this one a celebration of all the work he had put in to the others over the years. He replaced the chrome, got new carpet and did some work on the engine.⠀

"You know how people have idiosyncrasies—the things they love that do not always make much sense to others? El Caminos are mine."⠀
