When I first went to Peru for @ナショナルジオグラフィック it was to photograph an expedition to the Andes that was recovering Inca mummies from high altitude burials south of Cusco. One of them became known as the Peruvian Ice Maiden. Maybe because it was my first National Geographic assignment I have always felt a strong connection with her. She was a girl of 16 wrapped in exquisitely woven textiles. The weaving tradition was strong in this part of the Andes for centuries but by the time I arrived it had languished. The Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco has helped revive and preserve and pass on the weaving tradition. The women of this cooperative still dye yarn in the traditional way. Their work is wonderful. Today they make an exact replica of the Ice Maidens wrappings. Seeing a copy of her wrappings brought back a flood of memories from that first assignment. Of course I’m bringing a a set home. #Peru @natgeocreative
