To be honest, never is there any set idea what I want to photograph for any assignment or project for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Everything is a liquid thought, not containable for understanding until in the space, time and presence of what is before us. Such was the Ganga Dussehra ceremony in Haridwar, India. For the National Geographic story, Sacred Water, we knew the holy Ganges had to be included, the spiritual river for nearly a billion Hindus. Arriving to this sacred city in Uttarakhand state, I will be truthful - I had no clue what to do. One million people attend this holy event with an equal number of thoughts flowing, all just touching the surface. After two days of bureaucratic discussions with police for why I had hoped to gain access to a bridge overlooking the flowing Ganges, permission was granted. Before evening, @abhishekbaliphoto and I gently wove our way through the beauty of humanity, reaching the bridge, the only open space available in Haridwar. I stood there, still lost on what to do. It wasn’t until dusk when the magnificent beauty appeared, improbable to preconceive…countless offerings of lit candles, floating down this holiest of holy rivers. A trail of prayers to loved ones, to life. For happiness. To all of us.
