What can my heart tell you that isn’t already known? That night began like many others, expecting nothing, thankful for what may be. It was my 2nd day in Djibouti on the 1st @outofedenwalk story for @natgeo. When evening came, my friend, Stanislas, wanted to take me back the Hotel Dar es Salam, a simple place in the wonder of the Arab quarters were locals stay. I was tired after weeks of travel, but I ask Stanislas if it would be fine to walk back to the Dar es Salam along the Red Sea. For more than an hour we chatted about life, kids, at times in silence. The moon had risen, enough light to dodge unpleasant debris washed ashore. A distance ahead, I saw a group of people standing, many holding glowing phones, some swirling them about. Confused, I ask Stanislas who they were, what were they doing. “They are Catching”, he said. People from Somalia, Somaliland and Ethiopia, those in migration, would purchase a sim in the blackmarket from Somalia. If they stood just right on this beach, and were lucky, they could catch the signal from Somalia, able to speak with their loved ones, to family, friends who had immigrated further. Stanislas had seen this before, no longer astonished by what took place…the only link we have in the unpleasant movement of humanity today across our planet. How technology allows us to be connected while being completely adrift through the unknown. I’m often asked what this photograph means. Signal is our universal history. These kind people under the full moon are you, me. Every one of us, standing at this shoreline. The Precipice. Beckoning us to ask who we are, where are we going on the only place we can live. Earth. . #777 #printsale #signedphotographs #peace #love #theprecipice #signal
