Ruth Asawa studied drawing and painting with professional artists who were also held in an incarceration camp for Japanese Americans in California.
Later she received a scholarship to train as an art teacher but because post-World War II prejudice toward Japanese Americans prevented her from finding a student-teaching placement, she was unable to complete her degree.
Studying at North Carolina’s progressive Black Mountain College encouraged Asawa to be a sculptor, and it's where she learned about a Mexican looping wire technique. She wove wire to create airy and evocative sculptures, and her later work included large-scale public art commissions.
Asawa also lobbied to support arts programs to benefit children and her community. The Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts is named after her.
This photo of her is in our @archivesamerart.
