Ruth Asawa studied drawing and painting with professional artists who were also held in an incarceration camp for Japanese Americans in California.
Later she received a scholarship to train as an art teacher but because post-World War II prejudice toward Japanese Americans prevented her from finding a student-teaching placement, she was unable to complete her degree.
Studying at North Carolina’s progressive Black Mountain College encouraged Asawa to be a sculptor, and it's where she learned about a Mexican looping wire technique. She wove wire to create airy and evocative sculptures, and her later work included large-scale public art commissions.
Asawa also lobbied to support arts programs to benefit children and her community. The Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts is named after her.
This photo of her is in our @archivesamerart.

It was recommended that I call her in the early 70’s cause I was looking for a way to make a living crocheting. When I reached her she was very kind, listened well and then said “ Have you thought Of babysitting?” I was shocked. Didn’t I say crocheting? So there was a moment of silence and she filled in with “that’s what I did at first. At least you’re being paid while you practice.” I thanked her and we said goodbye.

Our children attended Alvarado Elementary school near Asawa’s home - and she would often come and assist teachers in the classrooms and help teach Art. Either she or her son or both set up a wonderful ceramics program at the school which still runs today, complete with a large kiln! What a lasting legacy she left in Noe Valley, and she is forever loved at Alvarado!

@shannonpatrick56 no they only took Japanese because we were at war with japan. Not justifying anything but blaming a race based on 1 mans decision is wrong and makes you look really bad. That was an executive order not a vote.

Concentration camp. Say it with me. Concentration camp not incarceration camp.

I keep forgetting? Which president put her in the incarceration camp?
